The Decluttering Timeline: How Long Should It Really Take?

As a Professional Organiser, one of the most common questions I hear is "How long will this take?" The honest answer is it depends. Here's my professional insight into setting realistic decluttering timelines.

The Decluttering Timeline: How Long Should it Really Take?

One of my favourite expressions is 'how long is a piece of string?' because sometimes the time something will take cannot be estimated because there are too many variables. Decluttering and organising homes can be like that. I often get people contacting me who ask me, 'How long will it take to declutter and organise my two-bedroom house?' and I want to say 'how long is a piece of string' but what I actually say is ' well, that depends'.

Because it depends on how big each room is, how much clutter there is, and how fast decisions are made on whether something stays or goes. When I work with a client, I go at their pace as we look through their belongings and make decisions, and sometimes this takes longer than you can imagine. This happens less so with kitchen items, but sentimental items can take a while. That's why we leave them till the end.

When you throw something like ADHD or (peri)menopausal executive dysfunction into the mix, then that is another variable, as often they become overwhelmed with all the decisions that need to be made and become fatigued really easily. So, for them, we may schedule shorter sessions over a longer amount of time, just to be safe. So, it really is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It's 'how long is a piece of string?'

Understanding Your Timeline

Several factors influence your decluttering schedule:

  • The size of your space

  • The amount of belongings

  • The available time and energy levels

  • The decision-making speed

  • Your emotional attachment to items

  • The level of support available

Breaking It Down

A realistic schedule for one person decluttering and organising might look like:

  • Initial assessment: 1-2 hours

  • Kitchen: 1-2 days

  • Main bedroom: 1-2 days

  • Bathroom: 1 day

  • Home office: 1-2 days

  • Garage: 2-3 days

The Time-Success Connection

Faster isn't always better. Quality decluttering requires:

  • Time for decision-making

  • Processing emotional attachments

  • Creating sustainable systems

  • Learning new habits

  • Implementing organisation solutions

All at Once or Gradually? A Professional's Take on Decluttering Pace

The debate between "all at once" versus "gradual decluttering" is one I encounter frequently. Here's my professional perspective on choosing your ideal approach.

The "All at Once" Approach

Benefits:

  • Creates an immediate visible change

  • Maintains momentum

  • Prevents items from migrating between spaces

  • Offers a fresh start

Challenges:

  • Requires significant time and potentially financial commitment

  • Can be overwhelming

  • Needs substantial energy and focus

  • May require temporary storage solutions

The Gradual Approach

Benefits:

  • Fits into busy schedules

  • Allows time for emotional processing

  • Potentially easier to maintain a regular life

  • Less overwhelming

Challenges:

  • Takes longer to see results

  • Risk of losing momentum

  • Items may shift between spaces

  • The space might be messier for longer

  • Requires consistent dedication

Professional Recommendation

For most clients, I recommend a hybrid approach:

  • Initial big push in main living areas

  • Structured timeline for remaining spaces

  • Regular maintenance sessions

  • Scheduled follow-up reviews
