A lot of organising advice is written with larger homes in mind as it assumes you have a loft, a garage, a spare bedroom or somewhere you can move things while you decide what to do with them. However, if you live in a one or two-bedroom flat, especially if you're renting, you probably don't have that luxury. In those cases, every cupboard matters, every shelf matters and sometimes every centimetre matters.

That doesn't mean your home can't feel organised, it just means we have to think a little differently. One thing I always remind clients is that a small home doesn't need to hold less life... It just needs to work harder for the life you're living.

Organising Without Risking Your Deposit

One of the biggest differences when you're renting is that you're organising in someone else's property, so that means it's worth thinking about storage that can move with you. Command hooks, tension poles, freestanding shelving and furniture with built-in storage are all brilliant options because they don't rely on drilling holes or making permanent changes. That's a landlord's dream.

You may think there is nothing you can do because you can't put shelves up. In reality, there are plenty of ways to create extra storage without upsetting your landlord. The first thing to do is to ask them. Some landlords are fine with you putting up shelves, as long as you put the walls back to how they were when you moved in, or if you agree to leave them in place when you leave. Where a good landlord has a good tenant in place, there is often scope for negotiation on what a tenant can do. If putting up shelves makes you happy and means you will stay longer as well as pay the rent on time, then you might find your landlord will agree. You won't know unless you ask.

What Really Works in a Small Flat

One of the biggest myths about organising is that buying more storage solves the problem. But before buying another basket or storage box, I always encourage clients to look at what's actually being stored.

  • Could one item do the job of three?

Small flats don't leave much room for "just in case" items, but that doesn't mean throwing everything away. It simply means being a little more intentional about what takes up valuable space. Furniture that works harder is also incredibly useful so anything like storage beds, ottomans, benches and tables that extend when you need them can all make everyday life much easier.

Making the Most of Vertical Space

When floor space is limited, it's amazing how much difference the walls can make... Things such as tall shelving often work better than wide shelving because it gives you more storage without taking over the room, and over-door storage can be surprisingly useful too, particularly in bathrooms and bedrooms. If your landlord allows, wall hung shoe cabinets move things from the floor, stored neatly in their own little compartments, not creating a trip hazard on the hall floor.
