Playroom Organisation

Playrooms accumulate faster than almost any other room in the house, and the usual advice to buy more boxes rarely fixes it. Playroom organisation means sorting what's actually played with, what's hidden from sight and therefore unplayed with, what's broken beyond repair and what's just being stored, before building a system your children (and you) can maintain without a daily battle.

Signs A Playroom Has Outgrown Its System

  1. Toys have started spreading into the hallway, the lounge, or wherever there's floor space left.

  2. Tidy-up time has become a negotiation nobody wins.

  3. Sets with missing pieces get kept anyway, just in case the missing piece turns up.

  4. Birthdays and Christmas keep adding to the room faster than anything ever leaves it, so the volume only moves in one direction.

What Makes Playrooms Different to Other Rooms?

Children attach to things in ways adults often don't expect, so a decision that looks simple from the outside can matter enormously to a five-year-old. Sometimes, toys stay even when the child has outgrown them, but the parent isn't quite ready to let go. Toys age out quickly as interests shift, but the old ones rarely find their way out of the door. When children are old enough, involving them in what stays improves how well any new system holds up. Trip hazards and safety matter more here than almost anywhere else in the house, and toys often need to rotate rather than disappear altogether.

What Happens When We Organise A Playroom

Where children are involved, decisions get made with them rather than around them, in a way that suits their age.

Storage goes in at a height they can actually reach and use themselves, so putting things away doesn't depend on an adult doing it for them, or they get put at a height that only adults can reach, so that toys that need adult supervision are kept safely stored.

We sort by how things are played with, such as imaginative, construction, and art, rather than by type alone, and where a full clear-out isn't right, we set up a rotation so toys can come and go from storage without the room ever being overwhelmed again.

And if you want the LEGO sorted by colour, we can do that too.

Whisked Away...

The last thing you want at the end of the day is for bags of toys to be left where the kids can see.....which is why I take up to five standard-sized rubbish bags with me, when I leave at the end of the session.

One less thing to worry about.

Real Client Story

Salima's dining room cum playroom had all the structure in place, but well-meant donations and Christmas and birthdays for two boys meant that it had become overrun with toys, and only the visible ones were being played with.

We spent a day working through the room by category, giving everything that stayed a logical home, in clear boxes, with labels, so that the kids could see exactly what they had, rather than skimming toys from the top.

A couple of weeks later, Salima sent me a photo of the boys with the message - "They are playing with totally different things BECAUSE THEY CAN FIND THEM!!! 🤩"

"I had a life-changing couple of days with Jo. Her calm, purposeful energy, exceptional listening skills, brilliant sense of humour and compassionate approach was exactly what I needed. To say she is a judgement-free zone is an understatement. My only regret is that I didn't find her sooner - and I am definitely going to book her again. My home is calmer, more peaceful and a place of sanctuary again."
