Disability Friendly Decluttering and Organising

Chronic illness, chronic pain and fluctuating energy change what decluttering and organising support needs to look like. I've worked with clients managing a wide range of conditions, including Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), fibromyalgia, chronic pain, hypermobility (EDS), chronic fatigue, ADHD, spinal cord injury, agoraphobia and migraines, amongst others, and I pace every session around what's actually manageable that day, not a fixed plan that ignores it.

When This Kind of Support Helps

  1. Energy runs out partway through a task that used to take an afternoon.

  2. A good day's progress gets undone by a bad day that follows it.

  3. Bending, reaching, carrying, or standing for long stretches isn't something you can rely on your body to do without cost.

  4. Visual clutter adds to sensory overwhelm rather than sitting in the background.

  5. Rest isn't optional, and needing to plan around it shouldn't require justifying to anyone.

What's Different About This

Energy and pain levels can shift from one hour to the next, let alone day to day, so a fixed plan that ignores that reality doesn't work.

Breaks need to be built in, not squeezed out to hit a target.

Sensory factors, such as noise, light, and texture, matter as much as the physical layout.

Decisions can take longer when concentration is affected by pain or fatigue.

Many clients have also had previous experiences with services that didn't make space for any of this, which understandably makes trust take longer to build.

How I Adapt a Session

Session length and pacing are agreed in advance, with room to adjust on the day if things change.

Breaks are scheduled into the plan rather than offered as an afterthought.

Work happens at whatever height or position is comfortable, seated, standing, from a bed if that's what's needed.

The day is built around what's realistic rather than what would be ideal in theory.

Decisions are never rushed, and stopping early is always a legitimate outcome, not a failure to finish.

To make life easier at the end of the day, I will take up to five standard-sized rubbish bags away with me, so that they are not left for you to manage. I can also arrange for doorstep charity collections, if they are available in your area.

Real Client Story

Trish reached a point where her health meant she could no longer work, and needed to move to a smaller, more manageable home. The house she was leaving had become heavily cluttered, which needed sorting before it could go on the market.

We worked through the property, clearing what wasn't needed and staging it properly for sale, working at a pace that respected her health rather than pushing through it. The agent's initial estimate for the property, in its cluttered state, was around £450,000. Once the clutter was gone and the rooms could be properly seen, the property went to market at £460,000, and sold at full asking price within a month.

I tried a decluttering service before and honestly… it was awful. I felt judged, uncomfortable, and like I had to explain and justify myself constantly. Then I found Jo - and what a difference. She’s neurodivergent too, so she just got it. No awkwardness, no shame, no pressure. She was kind, encouraging, and totally non-judgmental — and really careful about pacing things based on what I could manage that day (which, for me, changes a lot depending on my health). I felt safe, understood, and actually motivated — which is rare for me when it comes to this stuff! Highly recommend - especially if your brain doesn’t work in a neurotypical way and you’ve been putting off asking for help.
