Oxted sits at the foot of the North Downs in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it's been a favoured commuter town since the railway arrived in 1884, direct trains to London Bridge in around 33 minutes have made it a long-standing draw for professionals who want countryside living without giving up the commute. The town is often described as “stockbroker belt”, and the housing backs that up: large Arts and Crafts houses, timber-framed and stucco buildings, and generous gardens that regularly run to half an acre or more, even on the more modest Victorian terraces. Old Oxted, centred on a crossroads that hasn't changed shape much since medieval times, sits alongside New Oxted, which grew up around the station after 1884.

The character that makes Oxted so appealing, such as space, history, and generous rooms, is exactly what makes storage a recurring problem. Large period houses were built for a way of living that didn't involve much built-in storage, so it's common to find a beautiful home where every cupboard is doing three jobs at once.

How Does It All Work?

Before I come round, we have a free discovery call to find out a bit more about your situation, what is challenging you the most and what you want to achieve in your home.

Each session is either four (4) or seven (7) hours and is made up of two different jobs: decluttering, which involves categorising your items in the space you have prioritised and then going through them one by one to decide on whether they stay or go.

Once the decluttering is done, the organising part is where I find out what you have tried before which didn't work and then finding a solution that will work, then implementing it. At the end of the session, we want to see less stuff and more order.

Oxted's Arts and Crafts houses and older Old Oxted cottages tend to have generous gardens and rooms but limited built-in storage, so the organising half of the work usually does more heavy lifting here than in a modern build.

FAQs

Can I buy my own storage? Yes. If you'd rather source it yourself, I'll give you a precise list of what to get and where, so nothing's wasted.

Do I tidy up before you arrive? No, I need to see the whole issue as it actually is, so I can understand what's and isn't working for you.

Do you offer organising maintenance plans? Yes, I have a Monthly Organising Retainer (MORe) plan that costs £165 per month, with a minimum commitment of six (6) months. Find out MORe.

Do you cover Limpsfield and Hurst Green as well as Oxted itself? Yes, they're part of the same area I work in.

Where do donated items go? If time permits, I will drop donations at any one of Oxted's charity shops, such as Barnardo's, Oxfam, Age UK, Cancer Research, The Salvation Army, Sue Ryder or St. Catherine's Hospice, all on Station Road East, or take them back with me to take to charity shops near me when they are open. I will also help arrange collection, where necessary.

What does it cost? Individual sessions are £45 an hour with a four-hour minimum, so £180 for the shortest booking. A 50% deposit secures the date, with the balance due on the day.

About Me

The reason I started Order from Chaos was that creating order from chaos has been a defining factor of each of my previous careers, the first being working in emerging markets in investment banking and then creating order from humanitarian emergency contexts, including famines, conflicts, typhoons, hurricanes, and floods, etc. That work earned me an OBE in 2016, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Portsmouth in 2017. I have ASD (autism) and ADHD (AuDHD).

In my humanitarian career, I spent over 25 years helping people, and I still get to do that now. My ADHD means I understand the executive dysfunction that leads to disorganisation, and my ASD means I absolutely LOVE putting things in boxes with labels. Both helping people and organising give me a dopamine buzz and leave me happy at the end of a session.

I see many wardrobes with many clothes, and they're stuffed to bursting, but you can't actually see anything that's in there. Every bit of clothing is so tightly packed against the next bit of clothing that it is impossible to see anything at all.

Client Story - The Playroom and Cupboard of Doom

Della got in touch about a playroom that was overrun with toys and a craft cupboard that had stopped working for her two kids and for her.

The brief was straightforward: give the play area a system the kids could actually keep up with, and sort the cupboard so it stopped being a source of dread. We went through everything by category, gave what stayed a proper home, labelled where it helped, and let go of what had been kept out of habit rather than use.

The result is a playroom the family can use without a daily reset, and a cupboard that finally does one job well instead of hiding everything badly.
