Caterham splits into two distinct halves: Caterham-on-the-Hill, the original settlement with an independent-shop-lined High Street and the town's older, larger properties, and Caterham Valley below it, which grew up after the railway arrived in 1856 and now holds the main town centre and a denser mix of Victorian terraces and modern apartments. Both sit right on the edge of the North Downs, with Queen's Park and the surrounding chalk grassland giving the whole town a green, slightly removed feel despite being under an hour from central London. Caterham School, a well-regarded independent founded in 1811, is a big part of why families settle here and stay.
The housing mix runs from period cottages through Victorian and Edwardian terraces to 1930s family houses and newer developments, and the storage problem tends to track that mix closely. A Hill property with generous rooms often just needs a proper system built in; a Valley terrace usually needs more decluttering first simply because there's less square footage to work with.
What to Expect
We decide on either a four- or seven-hour session, which cost £45 an hour, with a minimum of four hours per session.
We open by agreeing what you want to achieve that day, such as a kitchen you can actually cook in, a spare room you can put a bed back in and are happy to house visitors in, or a landing that isn't blocked with boxes. We categorise, sort and decide, until what is left is just the stuff that is meaningful and manageable.
Storage is worked around how you actually use the space, and by the time I leave, the room is working, not just tidier. We close with one realistic next step, so the momentum doesn't stop when I do.
Decluttering and Organising Are Not The Same Thing
Decluttering is the part where we systematically go through your belongings in the area that we have decided to focus on that day to make decisions as to what goes and what stays.
The organising part is where we discuss what you have tried before and what hasn't worked for you, and then discuss ways that might work for you. Once we have reached a decision, it is putting those systems in place.
No two homes, or two brains, are the same, so the organising element is always bespoke to the way you and your family live.
Organisational Excellence
I had two very distinct careers before founding Order from Chaos. The first was working in investment banking, in emerging markets where everything was new and we had to learn every day. The second was in humanitarian emergencies, where disasters such as typhoons, conflicts or famines turned people's lives upside down, creating a different type of chaos. I was recognised with an OBE and an Honorary Doctorate. When I was deciding what to do next, it was clear that I was good at creating order from chaos, designing systems and processes, etc., to make sense of situations and bring order to chaotic environments. I had been diagnosed with both ASD and ADHD (AuDHD), and so it all made sense.
I believe this is why I can be calm when things are chaotic and am able to break down decisions until they are workable. My lived experience of neurodivergence means I bring a neurodivergent-friendly approach to everything I do.

FAQs
Where do donated items go? I'll take standard donations away or arrange collection at no extra charge. If they are open, I can take donations to Emmaus on Town End,Marie Curie on Church Walk, or St. Catherine's Hospice or the Salvation Army, both on Croydon Road.
How long will it take? That depends on how much you have, and how quickly decisions get made together. Sessions run a minimum of four hours and a maximum of seven per day, and I'll always give an honest estimate on the discovery call.
